ISO 9001:2026 Final Draft International Standard submitted for ballot

The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) for ISO 9001:2026 was submitted for ballot by ISO Technical Committee 176/SC 2 in April 2026. This is the last formal stage before publication. Official release is expected in September 2026.

Key additions confirmed in the FDIS:

  • Climate change considerations: organisations must address climate change within their organisational context (Clause 4) and risk register (Clause 6.1). Required by ISO's London Declaration for all management system standards.
  • Digital transformation: clearer integration of digital processes and data management into operational planning requirements.
  • Quality culture: strengthened leadership accountability requirements beyond policy statements.
  • Organisational knowledge: expanded Clause 7.1.6 requiring explicit strategies for knowledge capture, sharing and protection.
  • Clearer clause structure: reduced interpretive ambiguity throughout, expected to improve audit consistency across certification bodies.

Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificate holders will have a transition period after the new edition is published. The duration and deadline have not yet been confirmed; follow authoritative ISO and certification-body guidance.

ISO 9001:2026 Draft International Standard published

ISO TC 176/SC 2 published the Draft International Standard (DIS) for the revised ISO 9001 in August 2025, opening the document for a formal comment and ballot period. The DIS confirmed the revision as a focused update rather than a structural overhaul. The familiar high-level structure (HLS/Annex SL) is retained.

The draft ballot period has since closed. Precision QMS has reviewed the DIS content and our platform roadmap incorporates the clause changes ahead of final publication.
